Remmy Ongala et l'Orchestre Super Matimila

"I'm successful in Tanzania because I write about serious subjects. My music is known as ‘ubongo beat’, because in Swahili ‘ubongo’ means brain, and my songs are full of meaning".
For Remmy Ongala, music is a battleground. His songs speak of the oppressed, of life, love, death, social injustice and struggles. So it's not surprising that he enjoys an immense popularity in Tanzania.
On Songs for the Poor Man, Ongala teams up with the Orchestre Super Matimila, whose music is mainly based on the Zairian soukous but sometimes takes on Caribbean or Latin American accents. This was their first album produced in a Western studio (RealWorld in UK). This experience allowed the group to explore new recording techniques, without loosing their expressive vitality.
