Seya

Seya

Oumou Sangaré is back. The singer who has charmed the world with her subtle stylings of the music of Wassoulou, the south-western region of Mali, had not released an album since Oumou, her 2003 career retrospective featuring 8 previously unreleased tracks. So Seya is a very welcome return. We should point out that the singer has been occupied with various enterprises in the meantime – a canny and successful businesswoman, she owns a hotel as well as running a 4x4 concession with her own branded vehicle, the Oum Sang. She founded an orphanage for Bamako street children and is also global ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, campaigning against global hunger. It’s easy to understand why Youssou N'Dour called her “one of the greatest voices of Africa and the embodiment of the 21st Century African woman”.

Produced by Oumou Sangaré, Nick Gold (the director of UK label World Circuit which introduced her music to the world over 20 years ago) and Cheick Tidiane Seck, this new album was recorded in Bamako. Over eleven majestic songs Sangaré demonstrates that her voice has lost none of its power and flamboyance and the album sets out a vision of Africa in harmony with the way she lives her life.

An outspoken campaigner for the rights of African women, Oumou does not mince words. In the Wassoulou region, the griot tradition does not exist. Anyone can become an artist and is not bound to sing the praises of the nobles. This freedom is one of the defining forces behind Oumou Sangaré, a force she is adept at delicately channelling through the compelling melodies of these songs which flow with ease between tradition and modernity. This album is an absolute treasure!

Special guests include Tony Allen, Hervé Samb, Néba Solo, Magic Malik, Bassekou Kouyaté, Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley and Will Calhoun.
