Festival on the Niger, Segou (Mali), February 2007
Setting: The third edition of the Festival on the Niger featured a remarkable line-up of Malian artists, including Oumou Sangaré, Mangala and Toumani Diabaté. Set on the banks of one of Africa’s longest rivers, it underlined the wealth of musical heritage born in this town some four hours drive northeast of the capital Bamako. Our 20-minute report includes exclusive music extracts and exchanges with some of the artists that entertained a cosmopolitan audience in early February 2007. It was first broadcast by the music programme World Tracks, on Radio France International.

Abdoulaye Diabaté, Oumou Sangaré and Lobi Traoré were just some of the outstanding artists invited to perform on a stage built on water. We enjoy live extracts of their concerts as well as short interviews with the artists concerned.
