Tony Allen started playing with Fela Kuti in 1964, and recorded over 30 albums with him. He has worked with everyone from Manu Dibango to Damon Albarn, and most recently as a solo artist. His drumming is at the heart of the Afrobeat sound, he is one of the best known African artists alive today and his name also commands respect in jazz circles and the rock scene.
On 6 Oct the Barbican presents Tony Allen playing with artists from around the world paying tribute to his enduring influence and kicking rhythms. The bill includes Sean Kuti (son of Fela), South African kwaito star Thandiswa Mazwai, sax great Pee Wee Ellis, UK rap hero Ty, Senegal’s Cheikh Lo, soulful jazz singer Eska Mtungwazi, Afrobeat pianist Dele Sosimi and many more. This promises to be an exceptional night, coinciding with Nigeria's celebration of 50 years of independence.
