With a major programme of events over three months at Southbank Centre this summer, Festival Brazil presents the arts and culture of today’s Brazil through music, visual arts, dance, literature, film, debates and performances.
The music programme includes Tropicália legends Maria Bethânia, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes and Tom Zé & Band, plus samba singer Mart’nália and Rio cultural activists AfroReggae. Poet and musician Arnaldo Antunes makes a rare UK appearance and graphic artists Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá will be creating an outdoor mural along the riverfront. The Hayward Gallery presents two major exhibitions – Ernesto Neto: The Edges of the World and The New Décor – and an installation of hundreds of yellow streamers by designer Gringo Cardia. At E4 Udderbelly, Salvador’s Brazil! Brazil! combines capoeira with music, dance and Brazilian street football. Projeto Morrinho, the social and cultural project based in the Pereira da Silva favela in Rio de Janeiro, will construct a miniature favela in collaboration with local young people. Throughout Festival Brazil there will be free events and performances including mass samba and quadrille dancing and carnival costume workshops.
