Refugee Week 2010 launches with Celebrating Sanctuary Festival on 13 June celebrating the art of refugee communities in the UK.
Come and savour the cultural fruits of sanctuary at this unique free event which launches Refugee Week: 14 – 20 June 2010. This year’s festival focuses on the current hot spots in the world where conflict and oppression is forcing people to flee: Iraq, Afghanistan, Tibet, Somalia and Congo.
The live music programme includes festival headliners Dobet Gnahoré from Cote D'Ivoire and Transglobal Underground's Gathering Of Strangers project with Perunika Trio, Martin Furey and Jim Moray. Also appearing will be Amira Kheir, Duong Yang, Cevanne, Maambena, Marcina Arnold, Woven Gold, DuoPaprika, Tea Hodzic and World of Sevdah. There will also be activities for children, art exhibitions, workshops and a chance to experience a Refugee Tent (supplied by UNHCR). Lamees Ibrahim, author of The Iraqi Cook book, will demonstrate some of her recipes, while members of Sowing Seeds, the Refugee Council’s Hounslow-based community allotment project, will be on hand for more cooking demos, recipes and produce…and maybe some gardening tips. The Iraqi Yurt showcases Iraqi contemporary culture, featuring oud virtuoso Khyam Allami, the Attab Haddad Quartet, Kurdish ensemble Arya, and readings by writers, playwrights and poets including Patrick Neate, Chris Cleave, Malika Booker, Chika Unigwe and Prince Abdi.
