The winner of the 53rd edition of the World Press Photo Contest has been announced. Italian photojournalist Pietro Masturzo’s prize-winning photograph is from his series illustrating opposition to Mahmoud Ahmadinedjad in Iran.
Since 1955 the independent World Press Photo foundation, based in Amsterdam, has organised the contest celebrating the best international photojournalists in several categories. The goal? To promote and support the development of photojournalism, to report on the challenges facing the profession and above all to encourage the free circulation of information. Best known for the prestigious World Press Photo Contest, the organisation also runs several global events: conferences, educational programmes and their touring exhibition.
This year, the winner of the competition is the Italian photojournalist Pietro Masturzo. The winning photograph shows, from a distance, a woman shouting from a Tehran rooftop. The jury’s 2009 selection has surprised some, as past winners have often had a more immediate impact. This time, it’s the story behind the image that carries the full force of the photograph. The woman is shouting in protest, one week after the June 2009 election which saw Ahmadinedjad hold onto power. As night falls and demonstrators clear the streets, it’s Tehran’s rooftops that become the arena for the opposition to continue their protest against the Iranian regime. “I had to promise the protestors that the photos I took would protect their anonymity,” notes Masturzo.
The exhibition opens on the 22 April 2010 in Amsterdam and will then tour the world. For more information and to see all the entries visit www.worldpressphoto.org
