Mondomix has created a compilation of Haitian music to help raise funds for the reconstruction effort in Haiti. Download the tracks and all profits will go directly to two associations: Réseau Culture Haïti and Alterpresse.

From the stripped down folk-blues of Mélissa Laveaux to the incendiary beats of Adjabel’s racine music and the evocative drums of Carlton Rara, this compilation is a definitive collection of the many sounds of Haiti. When you download these 14 tracks you contribute to two associations helping Haiti to recover from the devastating effects of the 12 January earthquake. Réseau Culture Haïti is a cultural collective and Alterpresse is Haiti’s alternative press agency. Like Mondomix, these associations work with culture and media and their aim is to act in the long term to help rebuild Haiti.
Réseau Culture Haïti: rebirth through culture
The French writer and film-maker Charles Najman (director of The Revelations of Madame Nerval and Royal Bonbon) has been inspired by Haiti’s cultural history for over two decades. A few days after the earthquake he formed a network of French cultural associations who wished to help in Haiti. Supported by institutions, NGOs, writers, painters and musicians the Réseau Culture Haïti aims to co-ordinate joint cultural initiatives and fund-raising efforts to support the arts in Haiti. http://mymondomix.com/reseauculturehaiti
Alterpresse: Haiti’s voice in the media
Culture plays an essential role in the reconstruction, and so does the media. Alterpresse was formed in 2001 as part of the Médialternatif group. It is Haiti’s alternative information network, providing a valuable media and communications service, with a social agenda. “Alterpresse is aligned with the struggle for citizenship, which is something yet to be achieved in this country” explains Pierre Gotson, one of the organisation’s founders. As the aftermath of the earthquake unfolded, Alterpresse was committed to filing immediate reports despite scant resources: all that survived was a laptop in a journalist’s house, one of the few to remain standing. Everything else belonging to the agency was lost – their offices, IT equipment and documents. Under these catastrophic conditions it has been a huge challenge to continue to provide an uninterrupted service. Staffed by professional journalists working in four languages (French, Kreyol, English and Spanish) Alterpresse is characterized by rigorous research methods and independent thinking. “We are an important resource for international media who want to cover certain aspects of Haitian reality”, notes Gotson. Now there is an urgent need to get the agency up and running again, with a new office and the financial resources to guarantee their work into the future. “We have a crucial role to play in the reconstruction: to reduce the domination of foreign media reporting about our situation, and be able to represent the vision of Haitians themselves in the recovery of their own country”. http://mymondomix.com/alterpresse
