Latin Music USA: the Barbican and BBC Four go Latin

16/12/2009

Coinciding with a fascinating BBC series on Latin music in the USA, the Barbican presents an epic night of classic Latin rhythms in January 2010

New York’s Big 3 Palladium Orchestra brings the spirit of the Mambo Kings to the Barbican in January, performing the music of three of the greatest Latin bandleaders Machito, Tito Rodriguez and Tito Puente. Conjuring up the legendary Palladium Ballroom, home to some of the most incendiary Latin music and dance ever, the night is a celebration of the enduring legacy of Latin music in the US and beyond.

Produced in association with PBS, BBC Four presents a fascinating series of four films which trace the impact of Latin music in the US. From Ritchie Valens’ 1958 hit La Bamba (one of the first Spanish cross-over hits) to the rise of salsa with New York’s Fania label and pop stars Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin, the series shows how Latin music has become part of mainstream US culture.
