The official launch of The Black Music Centre (Centro de Música Negra) takes place on 12 November 2009 in Salvador, Brazil: the inauguration of the first international interactive multimedia museum dedicated to black music.
On 12 November 2009 The Black Music Centre (Centro de Música Negra) will be officially inaugurated as a cultural space, with a multimedia exhibition presenting the development of the project. This is the first step towards the building of this new museum in Salvador, Brazil dedicated to the history and diversity of black music. The museum will not be a collection of artefacts, instead it will be an interactive, multimedia experience about Africa’s musical diaspora, for Brazilian and international visitors. When completed in 2011, the Black Music Centre will offer 1000 square metres of audiovisual exhibits tracing how black music has shaped global popular culture through blues, gospel, jazz, hip hop, reggae, salsa, calypso, samba, rumba and many more musical forms. As one of the major centres of Afro-Brazilian culture, Salvador is the perfect location for this museum, which will form part of Carlinhos Brown’s Museo do Ritmo in the Comercio district of the city. The Black Music Centre is a French-Brazilian initiative, developed by Carlinhos Brown and Mondomix with the support of the State of Bahia, the Brazilian Ministry of Culture and CulturesFrance.

This is a significant and well over due space. Too long has the contributions of the Afro-Brazilian community; not least the musicians, gone without the buildings and platforms reflective of the their legacy and international status. The presents of the Centro de Música Negra, is welcome addition in a world where regardless of the sales of black music and the status of acts, the likes of Beyonce and Jay z, most black music artist still struggle to find access to international platforms. Hopefully the center will focus the world on all in Salvador, Brazil and the music born of the Afro-Brazilian people.
