Winning two World Cinema awards at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Havana Marking’s documentary Afghan Star follows four contestants in a televised singing contest which gripped the nation. As Hameed Sakhizada, Rafi Nabzaada and the two women finalists Setara Hussainzada and Lema Sahar compete for the ultimate prize in Afghan pop, the film gives a rare insight into the daily realities of a country racked by over 30 years of war. During the five years of Taliban rule music was banned outright, adding a sharp poignancy to this TV talent show’s phenomenal popularity - 11 million people, a third of Afghanistan’s total population, watched the final. When 21 year old Setara lets her headscarf slip and dares to dance in her last Afghan Star broadcast, shockwaves ripple through the country, death threats follow and she is forced into hiding. We’ve witnessed possibly the bravest performance in pop history.

The soundtrack features 1970s pop classics such as ‘Baaz Aamady Ai Jaane Man’ by the late ‘King of Afghan Music’ Ahmad Zahir and contemporary currents like ‘Laila’ by exiled hip hop star Arash Howaida. Afghan Star contestants’ contributions include Setara’s upbeat Zim Zim Zim and dishy winner Rafi’s Choon Darakhte Farwardin. Electro Bollywood-style spins on Wajiha’s Police are a reminder that Kabul was once a liberal city which partied like any other. An eye-opening collection shedding welcome light on Afghani pop culture.
