Remembering Nusrat

30/09/2009

Upcoming performances in Birmingham, Nottingham and London will pay tribute to Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the legendary Qawwali singer. The specially curated concerts will feature his nephew Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in collaboration with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Seal. The 75-piece orchestra will be performing Qawwali classics such as Dum Must Qalandar and Yeh Jo Halka Halka and popular Bollywood numbers, including Zindagi Jhoom Kar and Tere Bin. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who died in 1997, is revered as one of the greatest masters of Qawwali music of all time and is celebrated by many other artists the world over. As Jeff Buckley once memorably commented, “Nusrat, he’s my Elvis”. Nusrat’s formally nominated successor Rahat studied with his uncle since the age of 7 and is considered a master of Qawwali traditions in his own right.
