The Spirit Of Fela Anikulapo Kuti set to storm America!

Poised for release on 27 October 2009, The Best of the Black President marks the birth of Knitting Factory Records (KFR). Earlier this year, KFR licensed the 45-album Fela Anikulapo Kuti catalogue and over the next 18 months, they will release re-masters of all the Fela CDs in unique digi-packs with the original artwork, as well as selected releases on vinyl for the first time in North America. KFR will also be giving the first official release to the entire Koola Lobitos catalogue - this was Fela’s highlife band which he fronted through the 60s. If you’re feeling that Deluxe Version you also get the DVD including segments from documentaries Music is the Weapon and Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense plus the live footage from the Berlin Jazz Festival and interviews with choreographer Bill T. Jones and Fela’s biographer Carlos Moore.

Fela! the Broadway musical opens this November at Eugene O’Neil Theatre and is apparently da boom! This provocative hybrid of concert, dance and musical theatre, is choreographed by the amazing by Tony Award winner Bill T Jones and features a score arranged by Antibalas’ Aaron Johnson. Another Tony Award winner Lillias White, has been cast in the role of Funmilayo Ransome Kuti - Fela’s mother - and she will join Sahr Ngaujah and Kevin Mambo, who alternate in the role of Fela. The production began life as an off-Broadway show, - and apparently picked up massive momentum when, The Roots’ ?uestlove gave it a massive BIG UP on his influential blogspot. The result was that the venue was a roadblock of hip hop royalty including Beyonce and Jay Z who, with Will Smith, is one of the investors behind the Broadway production.
Look out for Felabrations - coordinated parties across the USA and worldwide to celebrate the late Black President’s mid-October birthday.
