Puerto Rico’s urban Latin heavyweights Calle 13 head for London. Watch La Perla, featuring Ruben Blades.
In four short years Puerto Rico’s Calle 13 has become one of the biggest names out there on the urban Latin music scene. The two half brothers, known as Residente and Visitante, deliver hard-hitting innovative hip hop with a Latin spin and a decidedly alternative beat. Transcending the reggaeton scene, the duo tap into the street sounds of cities across Latin America, such as Argentina’s cumbia villera and Uruguayan candombe. Also famed for their biting lyrics, which often have social themes, Calle 13 have long championed the continent’s poorest communities and dedicate their tough pop music to a positive Latin identity for the young generation. A tribute to the marginal San Juan neighbourhood La Perla, this track from their latest album Los De Atrás Vienen Conmigo, features Ruben Blades, salsa’s revered voice of the people.
