Staff Benda Bilili announced as winners of the WOMEX 09 Artist Award

Womex has selected the celebrated group Staff Benda Bilili, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, as this year’s winners of the prestigious Artist Award. Their debut album, Tres Tres Fort was released earlier this year by Crammed Discs and achieved huge critical success across Europe. The band, who describe themselves as the ‘true journalists of Kinshasa’, use their songs to document how the city’s street kids, orphans, prostitutes and war refugees are ‘the true heroes of this country’. Living on the street themselves, this group treat their own hardships and disabilities as the portal to revealing truths about life anywhere in songs which kick with originality and channel the full force of one of Africa’s musical powerhouses.

The artists will perform at WOMEX Copenhagen during the Award Ceremony on Sunday, 1 November 2009.
