Closed Zone – animated support for freedom of movement in Gaza

13/03/2009

A short film supporting freedom of movement of Palestinians in Gaza.

Yoni Goodman, the director of the feature-length animated film Waltz With Bashir, has just made a short film entitled Closed Zone. This film was created through an initiative by the Israeli organization Gisha which campaigns for freedom of movement for Palestinians, and the opening of the borders with Gaza. Since the 1967 Israeli occupation of Gaza at the beginning of the Six Day War, Israel’s army has implemented a complex system of rules and sanctions which control the movements of some 1.4 million Palestinians living inside Gaza. Even after quitting the territory the Israeli army continues to control Gazan borders, territorial waters and airspace.

The film is a protest against Israeli police actions which target innocent civilians on the pretext of putting pressure of the Hammas administration. Closed Zone puts the ordinary citizens of Gaza centre stage, showing the world that the residents of Gaza are “human beings who want to live their lives, raise their children and realise their dreams”. In the ‘making of’, Yoni Goodman explains that “the war transformed this project into a mission” and that the character in the animation who tries in vain to leave Gaza is “a character who seems a little like a child, a little like an adult, who could be Arab, could be Jewish – somebody everyone can identify with”.
