Brazil season at The Arcola Theatre

09/01/2009

Tucked away in Arcola Street in Dalston E8 and opposite the hugely popular Manghal restaurant is the award winning Arcola Theatre and they kick off 2009 with a Brazilian Season that features two enticing new productions.

On now and running until the 31st January is In Blood: The Bacchae – "Britain's first ever Capoeira production". Based on Euripedes epic Greek tragedy where Dionysus, the son of Zeus, returns to the mortal world only to find conflict with his mother, Agave, and his cousin, King Penthius. The writer and director, Frances Viner and Noah Birksted-Breen, have succeeded in creating an intense contemporary piece that grapples with religious freedom, apathy, political order and fanaticism. In Blood: The Bacchae is constructed around the devious and acrobatic fighting art of Brazilian capoeira. It draws on capoeira's combination of ritual, passion and music and the skills of the award winning actor Greg Hicks, choreographer Mestre Carlo Alexandre Texieira Da Silva and percussionist Pedro Lima more than succeed in drawing us into their physical and lyrical universe.

From the 19th - 24th January the Arcola presents Rodrigo de Roure's The Last Days Of Gilda - a vibrant one woman show that features the awesome talent of Gael Le Cornec. Already a cult hit in Brazil, we are transported to a favela in Rio De Janeiro, it's 40 degrees Celsius and Gilda is locked in her kitchen preparing her most delicious dishes. Outside, her neighbours are vexed and accuse her of poisoning their husbands with love. The Last days of Gilda is an explosive cocktail of food and sex, the sacred and the damned, violence and love. A combination that's impossible to resist.
