The Double Club - Congolese sights and sounds

12/12/2008

If this week’s review of Franco’s album whet your appetite for Congolese culture, you can find music, food and more at The Double Club. Part art installation, part restaurant, part club, this project was conceived by Danish artist Carsten Höller – the man who brought slides to the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. Splitting the venue in half, The Double Club places Western and Congolese cultures side by side, aiming to showcase the best of both worlds, without any concession to the idea of ‘fusion’. On Tuesday and Wednesdays you can hear Western and Congolese music played alternately, and test out the revolving dancefloor. Fridays are dedicated to Congolese concerts and DJs. The project runs for six months and will be donating funds to City of Joy, a women’s refuge organization in the D.R.C.
