LIFEM 2011

21/09/2011

LIFEM (London International Festival of Exploratory Music) kicks off in late October, bringing a boundary-busting array of artists from all over the world. The programme features all kinds of sounds in various venues across London and the emphasis is on exploration, by the audience and the artists who play jazz, electronica, experimental and world music, in creative, unexpected combinations. We asked festival director Miguel Santos to tell us a little more:

You have an eclectic line-up at LIFEM. What are you looking for in artists when you are programming the festival?

Basically, LIFEM wants to have the attitude of an explorer (where the "exploratory" in the LIFEM name comes from): go out there, see what is interesting and bring it back here. The festival does not want to limit itself as a world music festival or a jazz festival or an electronica festival, etc. It wants to be open to all sorts of musics. As a music lover, I do listen to all sorts of music and I think most people do the same. Why limit then the scope of the festival when there are so many interesting artists and genres from all over the world for one to discover?

This is the third edition of the festival. Do you feel audiences are getting more adventurous when it comes to seeking new music?

Yes, definitely. The festival is growing year after year and I believe the reason for that is that audiences are trusting the unique programming we do. There is no other festival with this kind of programming in the UK, presenting so many premieres and unique UK performances from artists from all over the world. These are opportunities that audiences praise and learn from, seeing it as a modern way of promoting interculturalism.

Any highlights we should especially look out for?

Of course, the whole festival! But I’ll pick out one or two shows for you - Claudia Aurora and Mari Boine. Claudia is launching her debut album, Silencio and she is, for me, the latest and greatest of the new fado singers. And I have worked with most fado singers! She has an amazing voice and feeling and she is a great communicator. Wherever she goes, she gets great reviews and comments. I am in love with her voice and she makes me feel so much when I listen to her live shows. That is rare to feel like that these days - very seldom artists can make me feel like that. About Mari Boine, I always loved the cultures of indigenous people. She comes from Samiland, up north in Norway, close to the Arctic Circle, and she has again a unique voice. I guess that is what I enjoy most - to listen to unique voices and people who have managed to get their unique personality in music.
