The Interrupters

19/08/2011

In the wake of last week’s riots across the UK every inner city should be doing publicised showings of Steve James’ latest award-winning documentary The Interrupters.

Filmed in Chicago over a year this film captures a period when the city became a national symbol for violence and the death toll was more than US casualties in Iraq. While the politicians talked about bringing in the army, James - the director of Hoop Dreams - and author Alex Kotlowitz filmed the gut-wrenching and deeply moving stories of three Violence Interrupters – Ameena Matthews, Cobe Williams and Eddie Bocanegra - who try to protect their Chicago communities from the violence they once employed as former gang members. They work on the front line in explosive situations. Their task is to save lives and all the characters involved have an inner power and a natural charisma. All are compelling in their own way but watching Ameena Matthews at work is mind-blowing.

This film asks crucial questions and over two riveting hours it goes deep into the community and the lives of those involved. The endemic violence is like a plague and CeaseFire, the not-for-profit organization they represent, treats it like a disease that spreads and therefore has to be interrupted. Moved to tears, overwhelmed by the intensity and the pain, I left the cinema determined to ensure that this film is seen in as many schools and communities as possible. A must see!
