Tate Modern exhibition - Malian photographer Seydou Keďta

19/11/2008

An exhibition of 50 works by Seydou Keïta. Celebrated in his day, and now recognised as one of the master photographers of the twentieth century, these portraits were taken in his Bamako studio between 1949 and 1963. Frequently using in-house props and clothing, Keïta staged formal portraits yet somehow captured an extraordinary intimacy with his subjects. For him, ‘A photograph is a souvenir, a work of art, and a document’.
