Inside Out takes off

29/06/2011

When French street photographer JR won the TED Prize earlier this year he was challenged to come up with “One Wish To Change The World” – he launched Inside Out, a global art project. His own work hinges on making anonymous citizens visible via supersized portraits pasted in public spaces, untold stories looking out. The idea for Inside Out was to take that model and turn it into a worldwide participatory movement: “Upload a portrait. Receive a poster. Paste it for the world to see.” Three months on, the project has taken off, with spin-off Inside Out projects popping up all over the world, with groups from Tunis to Montevideo to Pensacola. Sometimes, as in the recent Hunts Point Community project in the South Bronx, JR himself is involved. Sometimes there’s a theme, like his current series of First Nation Dakotans in New York. Other times he is just the catalyst for local action, in Tokyo there’s a wave of baby portraits going up and in Bangalore it’s art students who have jumped on board. Can art change the world? Inside Out aims to reveal personal identity, how you use it is up to you. What do you want to say about yourself and your community?
