New Awards for World Music

The Songlines Music Awards will be run in partnership with WOMAD Festival. The winners will be announced in May 2009 with a live event planned for next summer's WOMAD Festival in Charlton Park. There will be four categories: Best Artist, Best Group, Best Newcomer and Best Collaboration. Songlines readers and subscribers to the WOMAD e-list will vote for the winners from a list of the albums reviewed in Songlines during 2008. More details will be published in the next issue, out 12 Dec.
The Album of the Year category continues with fRoots existing critics’ poll, established in 1986. The winner will be voted for by an international panel of journalists and broadcasters, with the top 10 short-listed artist albums and top 6 re-issues/compilations to be announced next week. With Amazon.co.uk participating as retail partner, a special World Music Album of the Year page will be created. The winner will be announced on a dedicated show on BBC Radio 3 on Friday 5 December and a full report will be published in the Jan/Feb issue of the magazine.
Each magazine will be fully supporting both initiatives. With the Album of the Year announced in December and the Songlines Music Awards focus in summer, there will be a combined boost for world music artists across the calendar.
