In many countries, say France, Brazil or Italy, free city festivals backed by the local council are part of urban life. Citizens expect a bit of high quality culture in exchange for their tax dollar. In the UK it’s rather more rare, with festivals often eye-wateringly expensive affairs. So big respect to Africa Oyé in Liverpool which has offered a free African music festival for 20 years now.
With a weekend programme of international acts which is always one of the best line-ups of the summer, Africa Oyé attracts over 50,000 people. It’s time to join in and celebrate African music, city life and free festivals!
