Rio Breaks – a story about surfing

26/05/2011

Justin Mitchell’s documentary Rio Breaks follows two boys who live in Favela Pavão, a notorious Rio slum where drug traffickers have long dominated the community. With gunfire an everyday danger and teenage boys rapidly sucked into the drug trade the pressures are enormous, but right now 12 year old Naama and 13 year old Fabio have other things on their minds - they are obsessed with surfing. On nearby Arpoador Beach, the Favela Surf Club offers a community and a possible way out. Can balancing on a board on the open ocean give them more stability than their precarious life in the favela? With a competition coming up and dreams of becoming champions, will the boys save their friendship or wipe out?
