RIP Bob Marley 1945-1981

Reggae icon Bob Marley died 30 years ago today, aged 36. Revered worldwide, he remains one of the most charismatic and influential musicians of all time. While his status as a truly global star is pretty much unparalleled, the story of his life has never been fully captured on film. A new project may be about to change that. Award winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (The Last King Of Scotland, Touching The Void, One Day In September) is directing Marley, a documentary on the man and his music, due for release later this year. With the full co-operation of the Marley family, Macdonald has had unprecedented access to family archives and has interviewed many close friends and fellow musicians. As Macdonald told The Gleaner in a recent interview: “He was a perfectionist in his melodies and in his performance, and so driven. I want to understand why he was so driven." 15 minutes of footage from the film will be screened today at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
