Paranoia and passion: Almodovar’s movie music

11/05/2011

In Pedro Almodovar’s movies, music has always played a central role. A few days before the screening of his new film La Piel Que Habito (The Skin I’m In) in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, a double album of the best soundtrack songs from all his films is being released. The tracks, selected by Almodovar himself, have all the baroque passion of his movies.

Love, ambiguous sexuality, mourning, paranoia, madness – his favourite movie themes also run through the songs. Just as he regularly picks the same actors to work in his movies (Victoria Abril, Penelope Cruz, Rossy de Palma), the same musicians often crop up in his soundtracks. The Spanish singer Luz Casal brought a memorable languor to High Heels (1991) with her interpretations of Piensa En Mi and Un Año De Amor, and Brazilian legend Caetano Veloso played that sublime version of Cucurrucucu Paloma in Talk To Her (2002).

Two songs by the Mexican singer Chavela Vargas feature on the compilation: Luz De Luna from Kika (1993) and En El Ultimo Trago, from The Flower of My Secret (1995). Alongside these moving ballads we have a Manding blues - Tajabone by Senegal’s Ismaël Lo and the provocative 80s punk rock hit Gran Ganga performed by McNamara with Almodovar himself.

With clips from the original scores composed by his long-time collaborator Alberto Iglesia, this compilation will help Almodovar fans survive the wait until his new movie is released later this year.

La Piel Que Habito (The Skin I’m In) with Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya and Marisa Paredes will be on theatrical release November 2011.
