Treme - the cult HBO series on DVD

04/05/2011

Treme, New Orleans. The oldest black neighbourhood in the US and the birth-place of jazz. Katrina came through and left absolute desolation. In Treme, for those who survived, nothing would ever be the same again. Everyone there lost something in the floods. A house, a loved one, a way of life.

Struggle through? Give up? Each person has their own vision of the future and although the neighbourhood is abandoned to itself, the music endures. This cultural life-line, which not even a disaster on the scale of Katrina could destroy, remains a powerful presence. Jazz sounds on the streets and in the bars, and is a fundamental part of the healing. Come what may, Mardi Gras has to go ahead: music is the only thing left to hold onto.

The context is real, the stories and characters merge fact and fiction. Because among the invented figures, such as the pessimistic college professor brilliantly played by John Goodman, are phenomenal musicians playing themselves. As the camera follows them into studios and concerts, the music blazes through. Dr John, Allen Toussaint, Kermit Ruffins, The Treme Brass Band and many more feature on a soundtrack which channels the tale like a lightning rod.

Created by David Simon (The Wire), Treme criss-crosses stories and destinies, touching on tragedy and moments of euphoria with an authenticity which jumps out of the screen. The soundtrack CD is available separately via Universal Jazz.

Treme – Season 1 DVD (HBO) is out 30 May 2011
