Western Sahara’s desert psych - Group Doueh on tour May 2011

There’s a heady pyschedelic kick to Group Doueh’s sound, whirling between desert party grooves and Jimi Hendrix. One of the most popular bands in Western Sahara, they pull on the hypnotic flow of traditional Sahrawi/Hassania music, and drive it headlong into distorted electric guitar hooks. Group Doueh turned heads when they toured with fellow Sublime Frequencies artist Omar Souleyman in 2009, and this intense run of European dates in May promises to be just as euphoric. On 13 May, the San Francisco label takes over the Barbican, with a film screening, Q&A with label founders Alan Bishop and Hisham Mayet, DJ sets and a double bill featuring Group Doueh and Turkish psych rockers Hayvanlar Alemi.

Group Doueh’s new album Beatte Harab is out now and Zayna Jumma is due out 24 May
