Benda Bilili – UK screenings nationwide from 18 March and band on tour May 2011

Following a standing ovation at the premiere at Cannes last year, Benda Bilili! is due for general release in the UK this week. Five years in the making, the feature-length documentary tells the story of Congolese band Staff Benda Bilili, as they go from the streets of Kinshasa to the global stage.
The band attracted huge media attention with the release of their debut album Très Très Fort (2009, Crammed Discs). The extraordinary backstory (the musicians were a group of homeless buskers, many of them disabled by polio) puts a spotlight on the extreme hardships of their life in Kinshasa, while their music, guitar-driven urgent soukous and raw bluesy grooves, transmits a vivid energy blast. Their live shows are phenomenal, catch them on tour!
