International Women’s Day

08/03/2011

8 March 2011 marks 100 years since the inauguration of International Women’s Day. It’s a time to share stories, reflect on global struggles and blaze ahead. Women in worldwide music are forever being tagged ‘diva’. Capricious prima donnas? We think not! Join us in celebrating the phenomenal contribution women make every day to global culture and check out these interviews, videos and profiles on Mondomix:

Latin music has given us some of the world’s best-known women singers, from the bonafide Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz, to boogaloo firebrand La Lupe. Cumbia matriarch Toto La Momposina has been the voice of Colombian roots music for over 40 years.

Miriam Makeba, universally known as ‘Mama Africa’, took South Africa’s fight against apartheid to the world through her music. And her contemporary Nina Simone echoed the struggle in the US with her support for the civil rights movement. Mali’s Oumou Sangare has long spoken out for women’s rights while Senegalese hip hop artist Sister Fa actively campaigns against female genital mutilation and pop rebel M.I.A. stands up for social justice.

The young generation is busy forging new sounds, from the electropical grooves of Brazilian singer Ceu to the soulful funk of Nneka and Miss Platnum’s Romanian R&B, and not forgetting Shadia Mansour, "the first lady of Arabic hip-hop”.

Mayotte’s vocal ensemble Deba follows a centuries old tradition of sufi singing, exclusively practised by women, while free spirit Lhasa created her own personal folklore.

So who are your favourite female artists? Send your comments and let us know!
