The Chaser Years: The Photographic Art Of Pete Williams

10/11/2010

This collection features photographs of musicians by Pete Williams taken over two decades. His photographs resonate with feeling and depth, these are mages as intense and brilliant as the music. Williams graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1988, and he and his camera have maintained an essential presence ever since, documenting musicians in the UK and worldwide. From the hot, sweaty dazzling heyday of the UK jazz dance scene to early shots of Courtney Pine and a lucky Miles Davis moment, this exhibition includes Chico Buarque, Robert Wyatt, Max Roach, Gilberto Gil, Pharoah Sanders, Nina Simone, Macy Gray, Tinariwen, The Roots and many more.

This exhibition covers The Chaser Years, when Pete Williams was an integral part of the Straight No Chaser magazine crew. The seminal music magazine’s approach to images and visual arts was always an essential part of the philosophy, and Williams worked closely with editor Paul Bradshaw and art director Swifty to achieve their unique, outernational, emotive style.
