Lapiro: mission impossible

11/11/2010

Impossible Music Sessions was launched in March 2010 by Austin Dacey, a human rights activist and writer, to support freedom of expression for musicians…and to do it creatively. The organisers invite artists to do sessions, the musicians they pick are precisely those they know will never be able to come. Either because they are imprisoned, or because their artistic freedom and freedom of movement are restricted. But the stage does not stay empty for long. Local musicians get up there and make sure the concert happens in spite of everything.

The first session, in March this year, featured The Plastic Wave, from Iran’s alternative music scene. They play secret, underground gigs in Tehran, and were once invited to play SXSW, but were denied exit visas. For their Impossible Music Session, they prepared a show via internet with Brooklyn band Cruel Black Dove.

The second session, in June 2010, paid tribute to Baloberos Crew, a collective of rappers from Guinea-Bissau whose criticisms of the government have got them into trouble with the military police. The group joined in via internet, while Hasan Salam, a rapper from New Jersey, represented them on stage.

The third session will take place on the 16 November. Via mobile phone, Cameroonian singer Lapiro de Mbanga will join the show which Lamine Toure & Group Saloum, a band based in Boston, will give in his honour. From his prison cell, where he has spent the last three years, accused of inciting a riot with a satirical song, Lapiro will sing live and direct for the audience in Littlefield, Brooklyn.
