Despite a ban on singing her love songs that lasted a decade, the Mauritanian musician Malouma has never stopped playing, singing and expressing herself. Daughter of Moktar Ould Meidah, himself a reference in traditional music, she has been through the highs and lows of an artist's career that has been quashed by an authoritarian regime. Today she is considered one of her country's greatest musicians. Her international releases (Desert of Eden in 1998 and Dunya in 2003) have brought her into the international arena and she has toured extensively. In 2007, she recorded to songs for the compilation Marabi Africa.
