Based in the suburbs of the Serbian capital Belgrade, this septet is built around brothers Dushan and Dragan Ristic and their inimitable brand of Romani music. The duo were encouraged to defend and promote the Balkans’ Roma traditions by their schoolteacher father. Since they began in 1996, Kal has allied typical northern Serbian rhythms with a whole gamut of modern sounds. It is a combination that makes a mockery of the clichés and prejudices the Roma are subjected to. The band’s eponymous first international release in 2006 reveals virtuoso talents allied to a staggering variety of styles.
