DANYEL WARO (Ile de la Réunion)


This edition of Womex closed with a concert by Danyel Waro from Reunion Island, who was presented with the Womex 2010 Artist Award :

A traditional artist performs first for his community and if he is good, they don't let it go unrecognised. A great traditional artist can, through sincerity and talent, represent their community far from its borders and move a public who may be totally unfamiliar with the ways of that community. Danyel Waro is one of these musicians.

He is steeped in the maloya heritage of Reunion island, a music which, like the blues, was born out of slavery. It always accompanied the work in the sugarcane fields and was also played in the evenings after the day’s work was done. Maloya is a music with words that come from the heart and was forbidden by the French administration. Heir of Granmoun Lélé and Firmin Viry, Danyel Waro soundtracked the island’s liberation with this music and then introduced it to the world.
 

When he is on stage this modest man bubbles and hops, singing from the depths of his roots and his soul. His voice balances on the sound of his kayamb above the crashing roulé drums. His lyrics in Creole, which tell of the pain and the hopes of a people, touch the audience even if they don’t understand the meaning.

He brings together the tremendous strengths of the earth and joins them with the stars and shares this with us during his show. In front of the public he does not change, but to hear him sing transforms us. He is more than a great singer, he is a shaman, a wizard. His singing and his maloya takes away our cares, cures us of our worries and makes us feel peaceful.

He overcame nature in Arles and in Beijing, making the crowds forget the thunderstorms, the wind and the rain. He climbed the mountains of Reunion and walked on hot ash during the Tamil ceremonies. A former communist, he was imprisoned for two years for refusing to do military service. He is married under the double Tamil and Catholic rites, a manager in charge of a cultural association, he built his own house, and makes his own instruments, Danyel Waro is a free man, open to the world and a lover of culture.

We saw him help the gnawa musicians to guide the trance in Essaouira. We surprised him by sharing his experience of cultivating the land with the Brazilian Forro singer Silverio Pessoa. He sang with the nomadic guitarist Thierry Robin almost everywhere. We experienced a union between his maloya and the polyphonic songs of the Corsican group A Filetta, in Corsica, on Reunion island and during the Africolor Festival. Every time they come together, the South African Hip-hop singer Tumi and Danyel Waro share the microphone to sing a Pan-African blues.


Always listening with full attention, he tastefully adds his voice in just the right places, no matter who he is performing with. While always being himself, he still convincingly adds to any group.

To end this introduction I would like to quote these two last artists on their friend Danyel Waro


Tumi Molekane of the group Tumi and The Volume says

" For Danyel Waro the music is cathartic but it is also something very functional. He sings because somebody dies, somebody is married, because a child is born, because he wants to sing a lullaby to his wife. Waro is the consciousness of Reunion island. He represents the voice of those who have the least in society, who fight to be seen, heard and respected. And when someone brings these hidden aspects of life into the light, it is the noblest way of living. He is an exceptional artist, but he is also a very important man, not only for his island, for France or Europe but for the whole world. "

The rapper also confided in us :

" My son is three years old and he loves Danyel Waro’s music, I love Danyel Waro's music and my mother who is sixty years old also loves it, 3 generations of Molokane agree that his music is beautiful, necessary and incredible. For me that proves his music is timeless. "
 

Jean Claude Acquaviva, from A Filetta adds that

" Danyel Waro is an artist who says what he is and who is what he says. In traditional music, he is a benchmark. He says exactly what needs to be said, declaring that we have to stop always accusing others of being responsible for our misfortunes, Waro denounces what needs to be denounced but also asserts that he is responsible for himself and for his life. Because if you are not in agreement with yourself, then nothing makes sense. Life on the island of Reunion is not simple, it is necessary to fight to protect its traditions. But he does not wait till we allow him to do it, he acts. "

The leader of the Corsican choir continues:

"He is an artist who has exceptional charisma, an incredible stage presence and it is because he also has a very big internal strength. He has a great rigour, an irreproachable lifestyle, he is a big sportsman. Danyel Waro manages to reconcile the innocence of the child and the wisdom of the ancestor. "

These two testimonies reflect what numerous people who know this artist think and the fact that Womex has decided to reward him this year has delighted many of us. Before the questions begin I suggest we give him a round of applause.

"Un artiste de musique traditionnelle s’adresse d’abord à sa communauté et s’il est bon, celle-ci se reconnait en lui. Un grand artiste de musique traditionnelle peut, à force de sincérité et de talent, défendre sa communauté loin de ses frontières et émouvoir un public ignorant des habitudes et des règles de cette communauté. Danyel Waro est de ceux là.

De l’île de La Réunion il a chevauché l’héritage du maloya, une musique qui comme le blues connut l’esclavage, elle a toujours accompagné le travail dans les champs de canne à sucre et les soirées d’après l’effort. Le maloya est une musique qui porte les mots qui viennent du cœur et fut interdite par l’administration française. Héritier de Granmoun Lélé ou Firmin Viry, Danyel Waro en accompagna la libération et l’apporta au monde. Lorsqu’il est sur scène cet homme simple, bouillonnant et sautillant chante du plus profond de ses racines et de son âme. Il pose sa voix sur le balancement de son kayamb qui précède le fracas des ruleurs et ses mots en Créole qui disent les peines et les espoirs d’un peuple nous touchent même si nous ne les comprenons pas.

Il va chercher les forces telluriques de la terre pour les faire partager aux étoiles et nous faire profiter du spectacle. Face au public lui ne change pas mais l’entendre chanter nous transforme. Il est plus qu’un grand chanteur, c’est un chaman, un sorcier. Son chant et son maloya nous sortent de nos soucis, nous guérissent de nos tracas et nous apaisent.

On l’a vu vaincre les éléments à Arles ou à Pékin et faire oublier l’orage et la pluie à la foule, on l’a vu gravir les montagnes de la Réunion en courant et marcher sur les braises lors de cérémonies tamoules. Homme libre, ancien communiste, marié sous le double rite tamoul et catholique, responsable d’une association, constructeur de sa maison, fabricant de ses instruments, Danyel Waro est un homme ouvert sur le monde et amoureux de ses cultures. On l’a vu aider les musiciens gnawa à guider la transe à Essaouira, on l’a surpris partager son expérience paysanne avec le chanteur de Forro brésilien Silverio Pessoa on l’a entendu chanter aux côtés du guitariste de sensibilité nomade Thierry Robin un peu partout, on a assisté à l’union de son maloya et des chants polyphoniques du groupe corse A Filetta, en Corse, à La Réunion ou lors du festival Africolor. Dès qu’ils se croisent le chanteur de Hip Hop sud africain Tumi et Danyel Waro partagent le micro pour chanter un blues panafricain. Il était toujours à l’écoute, toujours à sa place, toujours convaincant.

Tumi Molekane du groupe Tumi and The Volume raconte
 

« Pour Danyel Waro la musique est une catharsis mais c’est aussi quelque chose de très fonctionnel. Il chante parce que quelqu’un meure, quelqu’un se marrie, parce que ton enfant est né, pacque il veux chanter une berceuse à ta femme. »
 

Waro est la conscience de l’île de la Réunion. Il représente la voix de ceux qui sont au bas de la société, qui se battent pour être vus, entendus, respectés. Et quand on met sous la lumière les choses les plus cachés pour Tumi c’est la plus noble façon de vivre. C’est un artiste exceptionnel, mais c’est aussi un homme très important, pas seulement pour son île, pour la France ou l’Europe mais pour le monde entier.


Le rappeur nous a aussi confié : 
 

« Mon fils a trois ans et il adore la musique de Danyel Waro, j’adore la musique de Danyel Waro et ma mère qui a soixante ans l’adore aussi, 3 génération de Molokane sont d’accord pour dire que sa musique est belle, nécessaire et incroyable pour moi ça prouve que sa musique est sans âge. »
 

Jean Claude Acquaviva, chef du chœur A Filetta affirme que
 

« Danyel Waro est un artiste qui dit ce qu’il est et qui est ce qu’il dit. En matière de musiques traditionnelles, il est la référence absolue. Il tient exactement le discours qu’il faut tenir en déclarant qu’il faut arrêter d’accuser les autres d’être toujours responsables de nos malheurs, Waro dénonce des choses à dénoncer mais affirme être aussi responsable de lui-même et de sa vie . Car si l’on n’est pas en accord avec soi-même, alors rien n’a de sens. La vie à La Réunion n’est pas simple, il a fallu lutter pour préserver ces traditions. Mais il n’attend pas qu’on l’autorise à faire, il agit. »
 

Le chef du chœur corse poursuit :
 

« C’est un artiste qui a un charisme exceptionnel, une présence scénique incroyable mais c’est parce qu’il a aussi une très grande force intérieure. Il a une très grande rigueur, une hygiène de vie irréprochable, c’est un grand sportif. Danyel Waro arrive à concilier l’innocence de l’enfant et la sagesse de l’ancêtre. »
 

Ces deux témoignages reflètent ce que pensent de nombreuses personnes qui connaissent cet artiste que le Womex a décidé de récompenser cette année ce qui a réjouit nombre d’entre nous. Avant de lui poser quelques questions je vous propose de l’applaudir."
