Music of Resistance - Radical artists on screen

Steve Chandra Savale (AKA Chandrasonic), founder of hard-hitting London collective Asian Dub Foundation, is presenting a series of six new documentary films titled Music Of Resistance. ADF have always been committed to uniting music, education and social change, and these films investigate six bands driven to make a difference in the toughest circumstances. The films screen on Al Jazeera TV, the award winning English-language 24-hour news and current affairs channel.

Music Of Resistance – Episode 1/Asian Dub Foundation

The series kicks off with ADF’s own story and how they have activated music to combat racism in East London and beyond.

Music Of Resistance – Episode 2/Tinariwen

The series continues this week with Mali’s Tinariwen. Once rebel soldiers involved in a bitter civil war, Tinariwen now use music to highlight the struggles of nomadic peoples in the Southern Sahara.

Music Of Resistance – Episode 3/Seun Kuti

Next Chandrasonic travels to Lagos to meet Seun Kuti, the young Afro-Beat star who has taken on the legacy of his father Fela, and continues to fight corruption with his radical songs.

Music Of Resistance – Episode 4/Massoukos

Massoukos is both a band and a campaigning force in Mozambique. Led by charismatic Feliciano dos Santos, their mission is to secure clean water for the poorest communities.

Music Of Resistance – Episode 5/Chullage

Nuno Santos (aka Chullage) is a Cape Verdean musician living in Portugal who has become a leading voice defending the rights of the Cape Verdean community.

Music Of Resistance – Episode 6/AfroReggae

AfroReggae is the band and arts group which has been a lifeline for hundreds of children in Vigario Geral, one of the most dangerous favelas in Rio de Janeiro. Against all odds, they have built an effective community foundation which offers music and dance as an alternative to crime and violence for a whole generation.
