The Festival in the Desert - Essakane, Mali (8-10 January 2009)This annual music festival takes place in Essakane, two hours drive from Timbuktu in Mali. It’s a chance to see artists from Mali and neighbouring countries playing under the stars in a fantastic location. The festival takes its inspiration from the traditional annual gatherings of Touareg communities, who after a year of nomadic traveling would come together to play music, swap stories and resolve differences. Since 2001, the Festival In The Desert has welcomed guests, and sometimes artists, from all over the world to experience Touareg culture. This year’s line up includes Desert Blues (the combined talents of Habib Koité, Tartit and Afel Bocoum), Tinariwen, Vieux Farka Touré and Etran Finatawa from Niger. As well as many more local bands to be discovered, there are film screenings, conference sessions, DJ parties and camel races.
