Ian McDonald - PlaylistIan McDonald’s novels River Of Gods, Cyberabad Days, Brasyl and the forthcoming Dervish House are set in post cyber punk India, Brazil and Turkey. He gave us this playlist – the imaginary soundtracks for his dystopian near-future stories.
Brasyl- A planetary treasure.
- Lovely 1966 jam session version of the first ever marching samba.
- Labelmates of CSS. Less spandex, also less chance of them disappearing.
Dervish House- No playlist of Turkish music is complete without the planet's great smoky-voiced torch singers.
- Picked this up last time in Istanbul and it's a hoot. These guys have to be seen live - someone bring them over here. Watch the audience: they out-Tom Jones Tom Jones.
- A touch of the Bryn Terfels but it's a very lovely song.
River Of Gods / Cyberabad Days- When I was researching 'River of Gods' this song was, like, everywhere. It still gets a party going. I think the French helps.
- Not really Indian at all but sounds so Punjabi desi. The totally depersonalised avatar dance just adds.
- Together again at last.
