Worldwide selections
Gilles Peterson has a global reputation as one of the most influential DJs out there and is a key player in breaking new acts from all over the world. We present Gilles Peterson's special selection for Mondomix.
Paul Bradshaw tracks down BBC Radio 1's Gilles Peterson at his Brownswood label HQ and gets the lowdown on a few global nuggets that have featured on his radio shows worldwide and dancefloor selections. As one of the most influential DJs out there, Gilles Peterson has been a champion of Brazilian, jazz and all kinds of leftfield dance music for over 20 years now. Fresh from an action-packed, road-blocked Worldwide Awards event at Cargo, he selects his hot favourites for Mondomix.
1. Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics (the forthcoming release in the Inspiration Information series on Strut) "People are going to go nuts about this. It's the vibe. There won't be a better record this year on the 'World Music' tip. I'm loving the electronics… just check this out (punches a copy of the CD into his laptop and starts grinning from ear to ear)… listen to that off kilter Randy Weston style piano. Malcolm Catto from The Heliocentrics knows exactly what's great about Mulatu and he's created a super modal and radical Ethiopiques album for 2009. Killer. I'm looking to showcase this project live in the summer. They'll play at my annual Worldwide Festival in Sete in Montpellier, in the south of France, and hopefully in London around the same time with Soil & Pimp Sessions and Seun Kuti."

2. Kumar (test) "This album's not quite ready yet but I'm going to big him up on the basis of his set at the Worldwide Awards last weekend. Definitely one of the highlights of the night. It’s Cuban music but it's urban. Think Orishas and Madera Limpia. Hip hop and reggae meets deep Cuban roots. Politics meets jazz. Seek out the track 'Yemaya'. C'mon, we need to celebrate 50 years of the Revolution and resistance to capitalist greed, and Obama's move to close down the dreaded Guantanamo Bay!"
3. Amadou & Mariam – Welcome To Mali (Because Music) "Love that. What a record. After that whole 'World Music' thing has kind of 'fringed itself out', there's a new spirit abroad and you have to give props to people like Damon Albarn and the crew at Honest Jons for revitalising the scene and, you know what, it feels fresh and edgy."
4. Various: 'Africa Scream Contest' and Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou: 'The Vodoun Effect' (Analog Africa) “These killer albums are having a massive impact. I'm definitely respecting this label Analog Africa and also Soundway Records, because they've shunned the obvious, gone off the beaten track, into nations like Benin and Togo, and have gone diggin' in those dusty crates to uncover those out-there hidden gems that we love. Essential listening."
5. Tony Allen (White label/World circuit) "Interesting that World Circuit have decided to pick this album up. It could work well - Tony Allen, amazing drummer… with a few special guests in the mix. Musically it's slightly shiny Afrobeat that in some ways drops between Seun and Femi. This comes out later this year and is definitely worth investigating." www.worldcircuit.co.uk
6. Cyro Baptista Banquet Of The Spirits (Tzadik) “This CD is a massive discovery for me. A fantastic percussionst, Cyro played on lots of Cassandra Wilson's albums and in her band and according to Jonathan Rudnick who founded Giant Step in NYC he's heavily into a fantastic percussion project called Beat The Donkey. This is a brilliant album. If you're looking for that Airto (Moreira) vibe from the 'Identity' album then look no further. The tune I've been playing is similar to one Nana Vasconcelos drops on one of those ECM Codona LPs. And, when you get deeper into this LP there are definitely touches of Hermeto (Pascoal)"

“So, that's it for now, but don't underplay the amount of interaction that's going on out there and how this music is finding its way to a broader audience and into the productions of people like Radio Slave or Benga."
