Camilo Lara Chart // Mexican Institute of Sound

Mexican Institute of Sound

Mexico City DJ and producer Camilo Lara is the playful, super-savvy mastermind behind Mexican Institute of Sound (M.I.S.) He’s released two albums under that moniker, with a third, Soy Sauce, out next month – all of them powered by a wildly creative imagination that jumps from vintage cumbia to dirty electro via hip hop and digital dance beats. Only natural for a guy that famously has a record collection of over 45,000 LPs and CDs, where monster club hits nestle up against fragments of forgotten Mexican popular culture. His work is infused with warmth and humour and a deep knowledge about what’s going on all around him – on the global music scene as well as outside his front door – the schizophrenic soundtrack of a city where 19 million people live. With that frenetic backdrop, the Mexican Institute of Sound issues its own license to feature a traditional mariachi band alongside a remix by Ad Rock of the Beastie Boys on his new album. Meanwhile we asked Camilo to give Mondomix a supersonico taste of the sounds of the Mexico City underground. Plug in...voltage is ok!
