Afrogroov DJ Chart - Eric Soul's African visions

Rwandan born London based DJ and cultural activist Eric Soul founded the Afrogroov collective to create new platforms for African culture in the UK and beyond. Promoting positive and diverse experiences with DJs, live music, spoken word, film and workshops, Afrogroov busts stereotypes and makes connections. Always on the look out for new artists, spaces and happenings, this is a crucial creative network on the move.

Eric Soul highlights the African tracks he is rocking right now.

1. Adesose Wallace – Tribute To Fela WORD OF THE MESSENGER (ELEPHANT WALK)
A mystical beginning followed by a funky riff, then the beat drops and Adesose’s deep tone kicks in - a killer!

2. Keziah Jones – Lagos vs New York / African Android NIGERIAN WOOD (BECAUSE)
The African Anarchist is totally inspired and comfortable with his Yoruba roots now….witty and worldly-wise, and the groove is not half bad either.

3. Nneka - Suffri NO LONGER AT EASE (YO MAMA)
A genre transcending album, Nneka’s lyrics are inspired, and delivered by a powerful voice - watch this artist grow and grow.

Nneka sings Suffri - live at l'Elysée Montmatre, Paris

4. Lopango Ya Banka – KONGO BOLOLO (NKALUNGA)
Brother from another mother, Malenge and crew deliver here a superbly crafted concept album - themed around the work of revolutionary Patrice Lumumba and entirely rapped in Lingala…stay inspired - yes we can and they DID!

5. Issa Bagayogo – Filaw MALI KOURA (SIX DEGREES)
The man has been a pioneer in fusing Mali tradition with electronica. With this release, he finds the perfect balance between tradition and experimentation.

6. Wanlov The Kubolor – Human Being GREEN CARD (PIDGEN)
Extract of a thought-provoking self-produced album, Wanlov’s sweet plea to the world is simple and almost naïve production-wise but spin it once and you’ll find yourself humming it all day all night….catchy and cute!

7. Soul ID – Oh Oh Oh SEX LOVE & PHILOSOPHY (ABB RECORDS)
Sophisticated Afropean soul music with tighter-than-tight vocal arrangements and slick production.

8. K’Naan feat Chubb Rock – ABC TROUBADOUR (OCTONE RECORDS)
A new sound, new attitude and monster guest…can K’naan do any wrong? Big Tune!!!!!
www.myspace.com/knaanmusic

9. Awa Band feat Tony Allen – Bababatteur (Quantic mix) (EKOSOUND)
A dancefloor killer…with Tony Allen and Dele Sosimi both on duty + Quantic himself….here is what AFROGROOV is all about. Shake Shake!!

10. Mamar Kassey – Zamani ALATOUMI (WORLD VILLAGE)
Purely gnawa-esque desert blues that will set your 2009 dance floor on overdrive.
