A Nova Musica BrasileiraPlaylistFrom Amazon techno-brega raves to subtle folk revivals. Mais Um Gringo gives Mondomix his playlist from Brazil's immense new music scene. PUBLICITÉ
A Nova Musica Brasileira - PlaylistMais Um Gringo is the man behind new label Mais Um Discos whose ethos is to release Brazilian music from artists who fuse styles and disregard genres. The label’s first release is Oi! A Nova Musica Brasileira!, a sonic snapshot of the bands making some of the most interesting music in Brazil right now. Here’s a video playlist from Mais Um Gringo featuring some of those artists.
01. Mini Box Lunar – Amarelasse (Amapá)Described by one reviewer as “Jefferson Airplane with calypso”, comparisons with Os Mutantes are also inevitable due to their youthful mastery of a dizzying array of genres. This video sees the Amazon-based band perform an acoustic version of ‘Amarelasse’ whilst wandering the back streets of São Paulo. 02. Catarina Dee Jah featuring Gaby Amarantos – Kay Fora (Pernambuco/Pará)This former DJ, now a manguebeat-pop-star-in-waiting, makes punky-brega with a nod to Parallel Lines era Blondie and 80s hip-hop divas. Here she’s joined by Gaby Amarantos, the “Amazonian Beyonce”. 03. Siba & Roberto Correa – Cara De Bronze (Pernambuco/Goiás)Siba is the Northeast’s leading folk-revivalist and Roberto Correa a master of the Central Western style of guitar playing. Underpinned by Roberto’s plaintive guitar and his own charmingly scratchy rabeca (fiddle), Siba calls out to the ‘violeiro’ (guitar player) who spends all night searching for the perfect song. 04. Alessandra Leão & Caçapa– Boa Hora (Pernambuco)Alessandra is one of Brazil’s most promising ‘manguefolk’ singer-songwriters. This life-affirming Afro-samba-de-roda features gifted guitarist Caçapa. 05. Lucas Santtana – Cira, Regina e Nana (Bahia)Part Tom Zé and Thom Yorke, Lucas Santtana is one of the new generation of Brazilian artists pushing the boundaries of contemporary Brazilian music. This is a track from his forthcoming album Sem Nostalgia. 06. Tulipa Ruiz - Só Sei Dançar com Você (São Paulo)Influenced by “field recordings, textures, noises and lullabies”, Tulipa’s playful tropicália-tronica stands her head and shoulders above most other Paulista singer-songwriters. 07. Diego de Moraes - Animal Irracional (Goiás)Great tropical-rock with a nod to Iggy Pop from novo-Tropicalia fuzz-merchant Diego De Moraes. 08. BaianaSystem - Oxe, Como Era Doce (Bahia)Roberto Barreto formed BaianaSystem in 2008 to experiment with guitarra Baiana (Bahian guitar music). This performance was filmed as they recorded a radio session for the BBC. 09. Cidadão Instigado - Contando Estrelas (Ceará)Cidadão Instigado centres around Fernando Catatau - a first-rate guitarist with a knack of composing incredibly catchy new-wave-electro-pop such as ‘Contando Estrelas’. 10. Gaby Amarantos ‘Melody Do Vetron’ (Pará)Gaby - the “Amazonian Beyonce” – is the queen of tecnobrega which is a genre as popular in the north of Brazil as baile-funk is in Rio de Janeiro. Here she lets rip like a tropical Cyndi Lauper in an ode to the Vetron aparelhagem (sound system).
