Womex 2007 Final day

Sunday morning dawned, one hour later than the day before, and the Womexers were invited to return to the FIBES Palacio de Congresos one last time to attend the Womex Award 07 Ceremony.
Presented to Andy Palacio and Ivan Duran from Belize, it pays tribute to the extensive work of both men to preserve and promote the Garifuna culture and Belize’s music industry both in their country and around the world.

And so the 13th edition of the Womex drew to an end. A record edition, with over 2,800 delegates milling around more than 300 stands. 90 countries were represented and to report on it all, more than 350 national and international journalists.
But enough of figures. More than the number of people present, what made this year’s Womex such a successful one was both the wealth and variety of fellow music lovers passionately working to keep this very particular music industry alive, and some essential logistical changes that gave the artists presenting their work in every evening’s showcases far better conditions to perform in than ever before.
To have Seville’s magnificent Teatro Lope de Vega as one of the event’s main venues for its showcases was undoubtedly a huge improvement on previous years’ arrangements. Both for the quality of sound and general atmosphere, delegates were truly able to savour the music on offer, comfortably seated in the theatre’s plush interior.
Even the somewhat less cosy pavilions in the nearby Plaza de España went down well, providing the space to dance to the groups programmed there.

So thank you and bravo to the efforts of the Womex team that made it all possible. And see you next year.
Marushka
