OPENING GALA
Another year has past, a year full of music, events, discoveries and projects for the World Music industry, and here we all are, back in Seville once again for the 13th edition of Womex.
And this year, a welcome addition to the FIBES halls where the daytime trade fair and showcases will be held, the sumptuous Teatro Lope de Vega, home to part of the evening showcases and venue for the opening ceremony and concert.
Comfortably installed in the plush baroque interior of the theatre, the delegates first heard welcoming speeches by new Womex General Director Gerald Seligman, followed by the Spanish Ministry of Culture’s INAEM Director Juan Carlos Marset Fernandez and Seville’s Mayor Don Alfredo Sanchez Monteseirin who enthusiastically reiterated the city’s support and backing for the Womex for the coming years.
Framed by a dramatic blood-red backdrop, Chicuelo and Duquende took to the stage with their group. A fiery and passionate performance by these maestros of flamenco, complemented by a breathtaking display of flamenco dancing by Manuel Guiterrez, roused the audience and prepared the way for Faiz Ali Faiz and his Qawwali group, an old favourite and friend to many of the delegates present. Vocal virtuosity and entrancing rhythms link the two genres, and soon the Qawwali-Flamenco musical meeting was in full swing.
Chicuelo’s perfectly dosed accompaniment on the guitar lent a rich sound to Faiz Ali Faiz’s extraordinary vocals, the harmonium flirted with the cantaor and the mutual appreciation of the musicians was a pleasure to see. As the palmeras from both camps gained force and the audience joined in with the chorus, the theatre filled with the most enchanting and uplifting musical crescendo. A finale fit to open this, the largest edition of the Womex.
But that was not all. The crowd then filed out into the beautiful entrance hall, where cocktails and canapés were relished by all, before the hardiest amongst them finished the evening’s revelries dancing to the beats laid down by DJ Lord Sasafras.
