Asia-Oceania > Uzbekistan > Sevara Nazarkhan // Sevara NazarkhanWomex, Sevilla, October 2003
Nazarkhan was born in Andija and began her apprenticeship of the dotar lute and its two silk strings at an early age. Her playing creates a warm dolcet tone and she allies it with the classical maqam vocals that are so emblematic of Central Asian music. In « Yol Bolsin », the renowned composer Hector Zazou has moulded her playing for the western ear, a fusion of pop and Uzbek traditions that Nararkhan revels in. « I’m a popular singer but I love to sing folk songs too, especially in the maqam tradition, » she told Mondomix. « Through my music and the traditional dresses I wear on stage I hope to be an Ambassador for my country. I am very proud of our new-found independence and want to show it at every opportunity I have ». // ALSO
