Super Violão Mashup
Lucas Santtana is a name which comes up over and over in new Brazilian music. And it’s always pronounced with respect. His latest album Sem Nostalgia, due for international release later this year, plays with the classic Brazilian format of voice and guitar. Using only these two elements, Santtana and his select crew of Brazil’s finest experimental producers break the tradition into new ground via distortion and effects. What runs through his sound is a love of Brazilian melody and a deep grounding in the work of masters like fellow Bahians Dorival Caymmi, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. Working in the spirit of Tropicalia with 21st century verve, and maybe the closest parallel to Tom Zé his generation has produced, Lucas Santtana is definitely a name to watch. Here’s the video of the first single ‘Super Violão Mashup’, produced with Gustavo Lenza, out on 7” and download on 25 July 2011 on Mais Um Discos.
