Sweet sounds of the Piedmont
String band music, played on banjo and fiddle, is an almost forgotten chapter in African-American musical history. Rooted in the foothills of North and South Carolina, the string band heyday was in the 1920s and 30s. The African-American contribution to the folk traditions of the Piedmont were pretty much obscured until now, and somewhere along the line the banjo, an instrument with African origins, came to be more associated with white country music and bluegrass. The Carolina Chocolate Drops are now reclaiming this heritage. The trio, Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson, play old-time classics and new compositions as well as string band versions of songs from other genres, like the Blu Cantrell R&B track ‘Hit ‘Em Up Style’ and Tom Waits’ ‘Trampled Rose’ as featured on their new album. It feels appropriate that this 21st Century band met via the internet, actually at a 2005 gathering arranged by a Yahoo community, Black Banjo Players Then And Now. All three super-talented players trained with the 90 year old Piedmont veteran Joe Thompson, one of the last direct links to string band’s rich history.
