Staff Benda Bilili, "Polio"
Staff Benda Bilili, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, are street musicians from Kinshasa, many of them disabled by polio. They describe themselves as the ‘true journalists of Kinshasa’, using their songs to document how the city’s street kids, orphans, prostitutes and war refugees are ‘the true heroes of this country’. Having lived on the street themselves, this group treat their own hardships and disabilities as the portal to revealing truths about life anywhere in songs which kick with originality and channel the full force of one of Africa’s great musical powerhouses. Their live shows are a totally inspiring energy blast of Congolese rumba that’s got the funk. Don’t miss this.
