After a night of revelry spent with old friends
and new, we all had rendezvous at midday for the Womex 2002 Award closing ceremony.
Director Christoph Borkowsky Akbar opened proceedings, summing up a very successful
edition in the new location of the Essen Zollverein and announcing the probable
destination for the Womex 2003 Seville. Next Charlie Gillett and Lucy Duran
from BBC Radio took to the stage in order to announce the nominees for the BBC
Radio 3 Awards for World Music, voted for by the Womex delegates, the results
for which are expected in February followed by the awards ceremony in March. Then
came the highlight of the event, the Womex Award 2002. Introduced by founding
director Ben Mandelson, Armenian duduk master Djivan Gasparyan was visibly moved
by the delegates heart-felt cheers as he received his Neolithic statuette
award. He then treated us all to a magical moment with his trio, filling the
hall with the sweet sounds of this extraordinary instrument, the symbol of his
peoples musical heritage. A perfect end to a fine edition of Womex. So
without further ado Aufwiedersehen Essen, hasta pronto Seville !
